Embracing Technology in Creative Education at Arts University Bournemouth

Updated: Jul 3

A Unique Experience for School and College Counsellors

At Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), we recently hosted a Counsellors Immersion Day—welcoming school and college counsellors to experience how students are embracing cutting-edge technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These technologies elevate students' creative work across various disciplines.

During the event, attendees took part in a guided tour of AUB’s campus. The highlight was our Innovation Studio. Here, visitors explored how students from courses such as Fashion, Interior Architecture & Design, and Product Design integrate immersive technologies into their practice. Throughout the sessions, we emphasized the industry relevance of these tools in today's fast-paced, innovation-driven world.

Showcasing VR Technology in Creative Design

Inspired by the ongoing Roland Garros tennis championship, we showcased a series of VR showrooms. One standout feature was a dynamic Lacoste concept space—3D modeled entirely in Gravity Sketch. This immersive experience allowed counsellors to not only view the concept in VR but also enter the same virtual space together. They interacted and explored the design collaboratively, mimicking the way creative teams in global brands work today.

This unique approach highlights the potential of technology in enhancing collaborative creative processes. Participants could feel the excitement as they engaged with the virtual designs, fostering a sense of connection and teamwork. The ability to walk through a 3D space together creates a shared understanding of design concepts that traditional methods cannot match.

The Power of AI in Rapid Concept Generation

In addition to VR, we also demonstrated the power of AI-assisted design tools like Vizcom and NewArch AI for rapid concept generation. These tools empower students and educators alike to accelerate ideation and bring ideas to life more efficiently.

AI technology is rapidly transforming the creative landscape. It aids in generating innovative concepts, providing designers with a vast array of possibilities at their fingertips. By incorporating these tools into their curriculum, AUB is equipping students with essential skills for the modern job market.

Counsellors were particularly intrigued by how these technologies can enhance educational practices. They recognized that familiarity with AI tools will give students a competitive edge in their future careers.

Preparing Students for the Future

This immersive session left a lasting impression on visitors. It sparked insightful discussions about how future-focused education can better prepare students for careers in the creative industries. By embracing innovative technologies like VR and AI, AUB is committed to providing students with the skills needed for success.

As the creative industries continue to evolve, it is vital that educational institutions adapt to these changes. We aim to bridge the gap between traditional creative education and the demands of the modern workforce. By incorporating technology into our curriculum, we prepare students not only for today's challenges but also for future opportunities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Counsellors Immersion Day at AUB showcased the profound impact of Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence on creative education. These technologies are not just tools; they represent a shift in how students approach their work.

By understanding and integrating these innovations, AUB is at the forefront of preparing students for the dynamic landscape of the creative industries. Our commitment to fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration ensures that our graduates will thrive in their careers.
